Telugu Desam party(TDP) President and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu had begun a day-long fast against the BJP led Central government
seeking special status for Andhra Pradesh along with other promises made before the bifurcation of the State in 2014.

Naidu’s fast gave an opportunity for opposition parties to come together in support. Among the supporters, former U.P. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, TMC chief spokesperson Derek O’ Brien and senior opposition leader Sharad Yadav had visited the protest.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi in an address at the event had said: “I stand with the people of Andhra Pradesh. The Prime Minister has no credibility left. He (Prime Minister Modi) did not fulfill the commitment made to the people of Andhra Pradesh. He lies wherever he goes.”

The TDP had walked out of an alliance with the NDA(National Democratic Alliance) over Andhra Pradesh not being granted special status.

“I want to congratulate Chandrababu Naidu and the TDP for bringing the no-confidence motion against the NDA which scared Modi. This led to opposition parties coming together in U.P. and then in a show of strength in Kolkata. There is only one slogan in the country — ‘Remove Modi and save the country’.” TMC chief spokesperson Derek O’ Brien said at the event.

He also added “This is not a fight for one party but to save the Constitution and federalism. The expiry date for the BJP has come.”

After the day-long protest, a delegation of TDP leaders will submit a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind.
