In its new beta, WhatsApp is about to integrate a reverse image search system via Google Images. A way to fight against the huge problem of fake news that is plaguing India.

The WhatsApp application receives constant updates, often releasing minor changes that are not very visible. WABetaInfo has made it their mission to uncover hidden features that come with new WhatsApp releases.

Delving deeper, the site has discovered an upcoming feature that is not yet available: The Reverse Image Search. By selecting an image, it becomes possible to search for it. Note that the function uses the Google APIs, so WhatsApp displays a message to warn the user that his image will be sent to the Google’s server to search.

The anti fake news feature

This new feature is intended to facilitate users’ searches during discussions and thus avoid believing¬†fake news too quickly. Hopefully, this leads to less forwarding of messages without doing actual research of its origin.

The platform has been under the spotlight several times in some countries, particularly in India, where fake news circulated in discussion groups caused some people to harass or attack innocent people.

The Facebook-owned messaging service, therefore, seeks to push users to take responsibility and verify their information before believing it to be the truth. This image search feature is not yet available to the general public yet, and is believed to launch with other more anticipated features in Whatsapp such as the dark theme for example.
